What part of Eyjafjallajökull don’t you understand?

Eyjafjallajökull, is a mountain glacier in Iceland, where the ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano.

If you where stuck in Europe around from March 2010, you can blame/thank this place.

Reykjavík

The great but actually small capital of the country, yeah you know… where the vikings used to hang out.

It is a cold place, specially when you packed clothes for being in a warm place like Thailand, so mission 1: warm clothes (including handmade couple’s single glove) and boots.

Alternatively, follow the local’s dress code.

Food

The food is not great but still a bite… or two…

Considering that the cold weather invites you to have hot meal, this place was perfect, you just might be waiting in line for like 30 mins, it is a small place but very popular, it is called Svarta Kaffið.

There is famous hot dog place, it is a popular place but more of the street kind of food, so if you wait in line for just one hot dog, maybe it is a better idea to ask for two, the place is called Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur and it got super famous because Bill Clinton said “best hot dog I’ve ever had” and we all trust uncle Bill right?

Hallgrímskirkja

Or church of Hallgrímur is one of the must in the city, everything is walkable distance and this one is not an exception. Here we got a change to presence a organ concert, it added value to the visit, that without mentioning the freezing cold holy water.

Around the city

Reykjavík is such a tiny city, it is possible to walk around it in a single day, the advice here is for you to enjoy the city for a day (hopefully weather is generous with you) and then do all the excursions possible, be aware that bringing your own food is a good idea, it is one of the most expensive places on earth, there are not many options to eat and places close super early.

From the Harpa building which is the opera house of Iceland you can have a great view, they constantly have shows and it the architecture of it is great.

The Þúfa isa mini hill with a little house on the top where they hang fish to dry and ferment it, not the coolest thing but nice for the walk.

Langjokull Glacier

This is an awesome experience, you take a bus from the city to a place “close” to the glacier, then you switch to a crazy truck, this kind of vehicle is designed to take you up to the glacier. The glacier was designed by architect, artists, geologist, basically a bunch of specialist and it is even appropriate for weddings, yes they have a little chapel inside. here is our hike.

Golden Circle

This is a must and the most famous trip in Iceland, it consists of a few stops to see falls, geysers, places where the vikings used to have important meetings, lakes, its is a cold and cool experience, you can get awesome pics here and its not a difficult one, so all ages can do this.

Hide and seek

Due some logistic problems we couldn’t align to our friends time in Iceland, literally we miss them fro a day. So we decided to leave the a little challenge, they had to find a liquor bottle hidden around the city, we gave them hints and a close location, so it was up to them the get warmer with a sip of Icelandic alcohol.

Curiosities

Blue lagoon

Yes, the coolest spot, you have seen it in every single Iceland tour advertisements.

Pools

Going to the pool every day, morning and evening is a common thing among Icelanders, we experience it and its awesome, super warm, there is only one thing that some people freak out about, I personally don’t care but you have to take a shower before getting into the pools, not just a rinse, you have to use shampoo and soap completely naked and there is even a guard making sure you do, if you don’t he/she will not allow you to get into the pools.

Reiðhjól

Or bikes in Icelandic require special care, a nice sweater or indoor bike racks, neat!
